However, as the landslide of people all across the globe began to flock to the ‘Net much like they did to California in the gold-rush days, they find that making money while you sleep might be a myth. They wonder if they’ve just been led astray by wicked, evil people with nothing better to do than make fools out of innocent, hardworking folks.

What is the answer? Can you make money online? CAN you make money while you sleep? I don’t mean an extra $200 a month to pay for groceries, but a real living. If so, how do you go about it?

It’s True! I’m Doing It Myself!
First of all, it’s not a myth. I can honestly tell you that I am making a full-time living online. And yes, there have been many mornings where I’ve awakened, turned on my computer, and found notifications of sales that occurred during the night. I AM making money while I sleep, and you can, too.

Let me tell you what I think probably happened to generate this long-standing myth.

The early Internet pioneers discovered ways to make automated income. They realized this was a wonderful thing and began to spread the news to everyone they knew. Then, however, those unscrupulous types (you know… the jerks) saw this as an easy way to make a fast buck. They began preaching that making automated income online was as easy as pouring yourself a glass of water. In essence, they told half the story. As more and more people tried to make a living online and failed, the promise of making money while you sleep became fiction instead of fact.

So How Do You Do It?
What’s the real truth? How can you make a full-time living online just like me? There are several ways. Let me give you the unvarnished gospel when it comes to online business. You may not like what you hear, but it is fact, not fluff.

ACTION STEP 1
Plan, Plan, Plan - It won’t happen overnight. Nothing good ever does. In the beginning, you’re going to create a plan then be ready to work that plan. You often hear about throwing up a website and making money while you sleep. Technically, yes, that’s all there is to it. But… how does that site get up on the ‘Net?

You have to create your site or have someone else create it. That means you have to take the time to learn professional website development (PLEASE, don’t create some junky, homemade-looking site!), or you have to pay someone who already knows how to create websites. And what will you have on your site? Your own products? (Having your own e-products is highly recommended.) Someone else’s products? You’ll need to decide before your site is created.

How will people pay for the products they buy from your site? Do you have a merchant account? Will you become an affiliate for someone else so you don’t need a payment system?

Will you go for high search engine rankings or rely on word-of-mouth, PPC ads, and other types of paid advertising? If you want good search engine optimization, you’ll have to plan for that upfront. Again, you’ll have to take time to learn how to do it or pay someone else who already knows how.

Before you take one more step toward launching your own Web business, find the answers to the questions above.

ACTION STEP 2
Be Ready to Work - Once your site is ready to launch, how will people find you? How, exactly, will you drive qualified visitors to your site? Will you use organic (free) search engine listings? Will you use Pay-Per-Click search engine ads? Will you buy ezine ads? Do you have other means for getting customers to visit your site? People won’t just come out of the blue, you’ll have to bring them to your site somehow.

Even if you choose to go for the organic search engine listings, you’ll have about a 4-week to 4-month wait before seeing your new site listed. What will you do in the meantime to drum up business?

ACTION STEP 3
How Will You Keep It Going? - Prosperous businesses are continually growing to keep up with customer demands. How will you keep your online business moving forward? Will you do research into what consumers want? Will you guess? Will you just follow the crowd?

You’ll want to have some method for gauging customer responses so you can know what your site visitors want and how to provide it for them.

One such way is to use Survey Monkey (www.surveymonkey.com). You can create online surveys in order to keep up with the needs/wants of your site visitors.

ACTION STEP 4
Service Is Key! - In order to make it in the long run, you simply must provide exceptional customer service to your clients. Those who lie, steal, cheat, or hide are destined to fail.

Understand this: Your success depends on your customers’ success. If they aren’t happy, you won’t be in business long. Make every effort to treat them as the kings and queens they are.

See? The people who turned the “make money while you sleep” fact into fiction did so because they skipped all the important information. Now that you know what to expect, you can see that it is most definitely possible to make a full-time living online. It is even possible to make money while you sleep. However, you must have a plan, be ready to work, look for ways to keep your business growing, and treat your customers as true V.I.P.s.

When you do, you’ll have all the tools you need to develop a long-standing business that - with time - will produce for you.

There are a few character traits that are commonly shared among those who have found success with their entrepreneurial ideas.

Self-starter.

Self-starters are the type of people who do not just sit around thinking about something over and over again. They decide on what needs to be done and simply find a way to get it done.

Take this example. You are in need of your own website but income limits you from just hiring a web design company to make that site. As a self-starter, you would go to work about gathering all the information applicable to web design and development.

Then you would develop and design your site. In the end you would have a website that you have developed yourself.

One vital trait of a self-starter is: they know their strengths and weaknesses and are able to accept them. This includes knowing how to outsource and overcome obstacles that stand in the way.

Self-motivated.

The self-motivated individual has a lot of motivation and drive. Because each person is a unique being, one person’s motivations may be different from everyone else’s.

For example, your motivation for starting your business could be to earn $500 or $1,000 per month or $10,000 or $20,000 per month. Or it could be that you want to home school your children and that may require earning an income working from home.

Your level of motivation to a large measure will be dependent up on your purpose and level of commitment. It depends on how big your dream is.

Creativity.

The creative individual has a lot of great ideas. They are usually able to come up with good ideas and problem solving solutions. Many of their ideas are often the results of listening and observing other business that is related to their own.

They focus on finding solutions, rather than dwelling on the challenges.

For example, if you have a limited advertising budget, you would get to work finding all the available free advertising avenues instead to thinking over and over how limited your budget is.

Your creativity would result in expanding your advertising program. You would also have the knowledge from research. Thus, resolving the problem and creating an additional income.

Self-disciplined.

The self-disciplined individual is one who does not need someone standing over them telling them what, how and when to do. They do not need anyone telling to get the job done. They are able to determine what needs to be done, then set aside time to do it.

An internet based home business may fail, many do first time around. But the self-disciplined individual does not accept that they are a failure. They simply learn from the mistakes and use them as a tool to attain success.

As an entrepreneur you should be able to adapt. You will find yourself playing different roles such as: marketer, promoter, public relations, motivator, sponsor, Webmaster…and so forth. You are not afraid of changes and are opened and flexible to them.

Successful internet based home businesses are not built over night but over time. As an entrepreneur you are willing to go the extra mile, put forth the time and effort needed to build a successful business.

I only attended the first half of the live training and plan to download and watch the second half when it is offered in the back office, which normally takes a day or so. This will give me time to get all my sites registered and the tracking code in place to start gathering statistics. When the training module is available I will be ready to move into the second part of the training.

The second half of today’s training covered a more in depth look at the statistics, what they mean and how to effectively apply the knowledge gained for better traffic and conversion control. Also mentioned were some of the leading sites covering Google Analytic usage topics with demonstration videos and an introduction to the leaders in the field themselves.

While I look forward to learning how to use this powerhouse marketing tool, I am intimidated by the learning curve at the same time. I would have kept putting this off if it wasn’t for the live training session today.

My sites are now set up to gather statistics. It is super easy to add the Analytics tracking code to a webpage or website. The code can track single landing page sites or full blown websites with thousands of pages.

I should be ashamed that I do not already have a properly working traffic analyzer on my websites. I went to college for marketing and know the importance of statistics in marketing. I guess this was my wake up call to start treating my home business as a real business and apply a little learning to the efforts.

Several years ago, I realized I was in financial trouble and going downhill quickly.  I was over my head in debt and unable to afford moving out of the severely depressed economic area where I lived.  As a young, single mother, I soon realized it was costing me around $12 a day, after travel expenses and babysitting fees, to work the minimum wage jobs in the local area.  I was headed deeper in debt doing what everyone had always told me was the “right” thing to do: get a job and work hard every day for someone else!

I sat at my kitchen table with my weekly paycheck, calculator and notebook and saw the numbers before me in black and white. The “right” thing wasn’t working; slaving at the local burger joint waiting for a better job to open up was not going to fix the problem.  I decided to learn more about self-employment.  It was a turning point that brought me down the path to where I am today.

I gave you a little about my background to demonstrate I know where many of you are coming from. Many others are experiencing the same financial dilemma of dead-end jobs and growing debt today that I experienced then.

Today, I’m a marketing consultant for a new online home-based business operating on a shoestring budget. I researched many online businesses before settling in on this one.

With all of that said, I encourage you to allow yourself to explore your home-based business dreams. I would, however, offer you some key elements to consider that I learned the hard way.

1. Don’t try to learn everything you need to know before you decide to begin. While research and knowledge are important to success, too much will overwhelm you and paralyze you with information overload.

2. Don’t think there is a magic program for sale out there that produces overnight wealth without putting in some serious effort.

3. Don’t think that you can figure it all out and manage it all on your own! BIG no no. A mentor and team are necessary for your learning process and long term business survival.

Number three is key.  Had I understood that one and found a mentor early on, it would have saved me from learning the first two lessons the hard way.  The hard way is almost always painful and expensive!

Finding a good mentor and a support team you trust is very challenging and time-consuming.  Many with the “work at home” bug avoid dependence of a support system and struggle blindly through the dark days of their small business startups.  This is an ego problem that must be overcome.  It is okay to need a little help learning the ropes.

Another lesson I learned that doesn’t conform to what we are taught is that the best mentors are not friends and family, no matter how successful they may be.  Nor will great mentors be free.  A good mentor is not there to make you feel good about yourself, be your buddy or do the job for you.  A true mentor assumes a great responsibility of delivering honesty and guidance through their own expertise.  Friends, family and free mentoring are often misguided by emotion and personal motives.

When considering self-employment, factor in the costs of a good coach who will take a personal approach to understanding your resources and business development goals. This is the secret weapon of the most highly successful home-based business entrepreneurs. Follow this advice and you are one step closer to your own success.
